The 4th retreat marks the beginning of the end of your passage in the apprenticeship program. You have worked very hard on building relationships--with yourself and the Creator (through your own inner healing work), with the Earth Mother (through relationships with plants, trees, rocks, Guides, Teachers), with the People (your clients).
While it's true that the 4th retreat is about learning about ceremony and how to lead ceremony, such an undertaking marks you as a shamanic healer. You step into the role of shamanic leader as well, as you lead ceremony for the People. It is another part of the broader right of passage. Welcome!

About the 4th Retreat
At this retreat, you'll learn about ceremony and about how to become a ceremony leader. You'll create, plan, and practice a ceremony that you'll be offering to the public on the final day of the retreat. There is plenty of time during the retreat to design and practice. The extent to which you lead the ceremony is up to each of you. It should not be a stressful event! In fact, leading ceremony can be quite fun! As you move through the retreat, let yourself consider and stretch your comfort zone without moving into anxiety. As you watch the faces of the participants light up when dancing and singing, you'll see how relaxed and fun it can be. : )

preparing for the retreatAs this retreat is about ceremony, there is a bit more preparation. Ceremony, after all, involves sacred items and objects, altars and musical instruments.
Purpose of the Ceremony You'll be deciding the specific purpose of the ceremony at the retreat. Currently, the ceremony is being advertised by HOME Center as a "Shamanic Solstice Ceremony," which could have flexibility of purpose. Your names are listed in the advertising. : ) The announcement has been posted in the newsletter and has been emailed to the congregation. |

Ceremony Space and Items
You'll be designing and creating a ceremony space at the retreat, but if you have items that you'd like to have in that space, please bring them. I'll be bringing the directional staffs. The fire will be in the center of the circle. We can also buy items, like flowers....

Ceremonial Garments
It is traditional for folks to wear ceremony garments, particularly leaders, so I invite you to consider finding ceremonial attire for this and future ceremonies. "But what will I wear?" Consider what you've been wearing inside the journey space each time you've put on your "garment." That might be a possibility for you. Or you might decide to create something else entirely. If you do create something else, let it be something meaningful to you, rather than what you might think is expected. Please do NOT put on Native American garb unless you belong to a tribe and have access to proper ceremonial attire suitable for this particular type of ceremony. Please DO wear something that is special to you (not just jeans, for example). Putting on ceremonial garments is a part of honoring the sacred ceremony that we will be doing.

Although you don't yet know the purpose of the ceremony, (which will dictate to some extent the songs and dances you select/create), please bring any sheet music or lyrics you may need. You will not be able to scroll on your phone during the ceremony, but you can have access to a little side table for a reference point for ceremony outlines or music. I'll be happy to play the guitar for any songs you'd want me to, provided I can find the chords (usually easy to do). Bring any instruments that you wish and can carry. I will bring a guitar, and a tongue drum for use if you want them.
