personal message from your apprenticeship leader
Selena Whittle
The second retreat is another exciting beginning because it is here that you begin to learn healing skills that you can immediately use with current clients (or friends, in this case). I won't list these skills here. They're listed below. Peruse and let your inspiration build!
Of course, you will continue to deepen your shamanic relationships--with your inner ones, the Earth Mother, your fellow apprentices, the home where we are staying, the mountain, the river, your clothes...As these relationships progress and deepen, you'll naturally fall into a place of love and gratitude. Falling in love with all that surrounds you will call you to give, to serve, to heal, to love all over again! I invite you to fall in love.... As always, truly, it is a privilege to be a part of this process with you. You will hear me say that again and again as my own love and gratitude, as well as a sense of humble honor bubbles up from the depths. |

About the 2nd Retreat
This second retreat marks the beginning of learning healing skills! You will learn the healing skills necessary for the first portion of the shamanic healing session:
Creating Sacred Space
Conducting the Pre-Session Ritual
How to Conduct the First Contact Conversation with the Client
The Steps and Process of the Pre-Journey Consultation
(includes practicing Shamanic Sight, Active Listening, and Identification of the Issue)
Guiding a Client into a Shamanic Journey
Guiding a Client in Spirit Animal, Spirit Teacher, and Power Object Retrievals
Once you have completed this retreat and feel comfortable doing so, you'll be able to offer Spirit Animal, Spirit Teacher and Power Object Retrievals to clients.
In addition to these Healing Skills, you'll learn about:
Encouraging Healing of Clients in Other Areas of Life (Food, Body Movement as examples)
Ethics in Shamanic Healing - (we begin this subject at the retreat and continue afterwards)
Building a Shamanic Healing Practice
Energetic Practice of Chakra Balancing according to the teachings of Donna Eden (time permitting)
General Retreat Schedule
We will continue with the general schedule established in the first retreat, with classes occurring in the morning and healing and/or practice sessions in the afternoons. Evenings will be what we want them to be!
Retreat Dates/Times
Check in: Wednesday, 19th no earlier than 4pm!
Check out: Monday, 24th no later than 11am!
Retreat Officially Begins 9:00 am Thursday 5/20 and goes through 6:00 pm Sunday, 5/23
Location
Home near Mt. Hood
We are renting a home in the foothills of Mt. Hood. It is surrounded by trees and backs to a river, which makes a lovely, scared space for our retreat. Being so close to Mt. Hood, we have the opportunity to hold classes and/or sessions in the woods provided that the weather is warm enough. As we get closer to the retreat the hostess will provide the address and method of access, which I'll pass along to you in Discord.
Getting There
For those flying in, Portland International Airport (PDX) is the airport to choose when making your reservations. For people flying in, we recommend purchasing your plane ticket sooner rather than later, as airfares tend to increase as the dates get closer. The airport is about an hour away from our rental home, so you'll need to find a ride to get there. Uber and Lyft are some alternatives. If you coordinate with other apprentices who are also in need of a ride, you may be able to lessen the fee. Local apprentices are usually willing to provide rides to people whenever possible.
Payment for Lodging and Tuition
You have already received an invoice for lodging. Please make that payment before attending the retreat. Fees for tuition are added into your monthly payment schedule.

At this retreat, you will receive...
In addition to the classes and healing sessions, the experiences and ceremony, you will receive your 2nd Retreat Apprenticeship Manual and a Gift from your Apprenticeship Leader.
Preparing for the Retreat
As you prepare for the retreat, remember to consider how you're feeling and thinking. Give yourself space to be aware of this and to work with any inner ones as you need. If you need help or support, please contact a fellow apprentice or apprenticeship leader.
Books
For this retreat, there are 2 books and an online accessible PDF (as a reference):
Basic Counseling Skills by Kenneth Kelly. (If you are already a licensed therapist, you may not need to
purchase this book! Please ask your apprenticeship leader about this.) This book is easy-to-read and
covers counseling skills as they are taught in conventional western psychotherapy. We will use these
active listening skills during the pre-journey consultation portion of a session. If you can read it
prior to the retreat, you'll be well prepared.
The Ethics of Caring by Kylea Taylor. You do not need to read this book before the retreat and can
read it at your own pace, particularly since we'll only be beginning the course on ethics at the retreat.
We'll be continuing the course when we resume classes after the retreat.
APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct - I do NOT recommend reading this
from beginning to end. The intention here is to give you an idea of the standards of the American
Psychological Association (APA). You may use this as a guideline and a reference when you come into
difficult ethical issues. There is no need to buy this. You can find a copy in PDF form online anytime you
need it.
There is no book for the shamanic skills you'll be learning, so the writings in the manual will support your learning in that way.
Sacred Objects
1. As in the first retreat, we’ll be creating an altar, so don't forget your sacred object! The object doesn’t have to be particularly “shamanic,” but it should definitely have meaning for you. By putting it on the altar, you are making a symbolic statement about your presence in the group for the duration of the retreat. You will take the sacred object back with you when you leave.
2. Also, please bring a picture of yourself as a child (any age) to put on the altar as a way of honoring all the inner work that you and you inner ones have done.
The Drum
Of course! the drum comes with you! This is only a reminder of the need to bring your friend which you'll be using quite a bit as you practice your shamanic healing skills!
Smudging Feathers
You may have already made a tool for use in smudging yourself, your space, and clients. If you haven't, perhaps you have some feathers that have been gifted to you by the Earth Mother. Using your natural artistic talent, you can create your smudging tool to bring with you. Again, you'll be using it in practice work.
You do not need to bring smudging material (like sage, etc.). I'll be bringing that for our use.
Preparation for Ceremony
Also, as we will be doing ceremony, you might want to bring any musical instruments that you play. Along that same line, you may choose to bring ceremonial clothing if you like. Poetry, writing, or songs are also welcome!
Paper and Pens/Pencils (optional)
Again, a reminder....
Clothing and Shoes
Please wear comfortable, casual clothing and bring warm house-shoes/booties to keep your feet warm indoors.
Food
We’ll be providing our own food for the retreat. Please plan on providing a dish or two for sharing as well as any other food that you may want to make your stay comforting and nurturing. People who are coming from a distance may want to do a bit of grocery shopping on the way in, borrow a car from someone after you arrive, or perhaps walk (to the Hoodland Thriftway). For a full shopping experience, there is a Safeway Store (37601 US-26, Sandy, OR 97055) which has a Starbucks inside. Closer to our rental house is Hoodland Thriftway (68280 US-26, Welches, OR 97067). In this same shopping center, there is also Coffee Brewsters . If someone wants to coordinate meals and food as we get closer to the retreat, please feel free to do that.
